Yes, they moved some of them around to make room for the new hotel.

I shop local or online, only go to malls to try things before I buy them online.
If everyone does this, then there would be no place to try things out. I would rather shop at a brick and mortar store than Amazon if prices are similar.

Personally, for me, this is where the price match is advantageous. For stores that offer them, I use price matching often, so if I need to return it. I don't have to ship it back.

Also, indoor malls in are a welcome relief come winter.

Count me in the "I don't mind watching indoor malls die a slow and painful death" camp; but I hardly think it's the same as not not supporting brick and mortar stores. I prefer brick and mortar, actually. I'm happy to see that retail and dining is returning in force to more urban settings (i.e. Downtown Crossing). That's not to say that there's no place for suburban retail. There is. But we exceeded critical mass of box retail, shopping malls, and retail strips a while ago and we're coming back down to earth. It's a good thing.

I will say that no matter how high end the mall is they are rarely fun places to visit unless you go very early in the morning or some other off time. They are a ZOO! I think the derby st mall has ruined Hingham. They had easy access to the Braintree mall so I'm not sure why the town wanted it other than it brings in money which is of course important, but again it's made for a more crowded area. They certainly arent lacking i money and maybe it's even helped the town but it sure has created a mess on the highways.

In the case of Taunton, Silver City is struggling pretty bad. There are tons of vacancies and the attempt by the new owners to rebrand it isn't successful yet (idk if it will be). That spot will sit vacant for some time. They never really recovered from the closure of Bradlees (it's now a Dick's and the first level is a revolving door of places... Now a kids bounce house playground). This one could be crippling.

The real problem is, Providence Place is too close to the Warwick Mall (home to the original JC Penney anchor in the New England area) and the Emerald Square Mall. I'd be interested to know which other stores want to locate where the current JC Penney is currently at in Prov Place? BTW, it is absurd that a grocery store would go in to PP, this would be equivalent to putting a grocery store as an anchor at South Shore Plaza or Natick Mall.
As I suspected, there was no interest in any retailer going to the old JC Penney location at Providence Place Mall. This JC Penney location will be imploded, and used as nothing more than additional parking.

Yeah they are demoing it in Springfield too

Owners plan demolition of vacant JC Penney building at Eastfield Mall as part of makeover plans | masslive.com

JC Penny from what came out looks like they have serious cash flow problems. I'd give this about nine months (fuel prices, interest and holidays)

The mall isn't even featured when talking about the city at this point. Now the Holyoke Mall is packed but this has gradually died. JCP closed, macy's closed..sears well that's going to be the really big one to go out.

JCP has about 100,000 employees. That's going to be ugly. Sears and Kmart are the same company. I went into a kmart a few months ago. $4 milk? What? If these stores aren't relevant vs target and walmart how they relevant to amazon? I try sometimes to shop at stores but the overhead is killing them. I ordered a book at B&N to try to help this author out. It's been almost a week with no update. By now Amazon would have sent an email about the confirmation and the shipping status with a ETA.

What can save malls? here's a few things maybe

1) Local, local local. Local foods, local merchants, l

2) Security. If a business can't do things locally due to security well there it is

3) Entertainment beyond just a movie theater. Bars, clubs, mini golf, karting maybe, how about a beercade?

4) stores of things that people really prefer in the flesh. Music instrument stores, simulators of sporting goods (bass pro shops is great at this)

5) Don't be open 24/7 and force lower staffing, it doesn't work. Fixed hours for employees makes for more reliability and predictability.

6) How about things harder to find. Shoe repair, butcher shops, supply houses (plumbing/electrical etc)

Sears is closing two more MA stores - Silver City Galleria in Taunton and at the Holyoke Mall. Both will close by the end of September.

The Holyoke Mall will survive this closing better than Silver City as it will still have Macy's, JC Penney, and Target. With Sears departing the Silver City Galleria, that mall will no longer have a single department store.

Frankly, I'm surprised it took this long. The area is the epitome of a flooded market. Within 35 minutes of the Galleria Mall, you have Westgate Mall, Swansea Mall, Dartmouth Mall, Emerald Square Mall, South Shore Plaza, Wrentham Outlets, Patriot Place, Legacy Place, Kingston Collection, Providence Place, Wareham Crossing, Colony Place, and dozens of smaller strip mall areas.

A combination of a shifting market (indoor malls are out, outdoor destination shopping like Wrentham, Patriot Place, Legacy Place, Colony Place, etc. are in), nearby malls that offer more/are thriving (Dartmouth, Providence, South Shore Plaza, etc.), online shopping (duh), and just a vast over saturation given the population and socioeconomics of the region have doomed malls like Silver City. Dartmouth survives because it's just far enough out of the high concentration of retail to remain relevant. While people in the Taunton area will pass on Silver City to go to Wrentham, Patriot Place, South Shore Plaza, etc. It's trickier for people in Dartmouth, Mattapoisett, Acushnet, etc. to drive to another place because they're all a bit further. Swansea is in a similar boat to Silver City - it's way too close to Providence Place and the Seekonk retail corridor.

I've long though that the only way the mall survives is if it somehow is part of the new casino for the Southeastern part of the state. Attach a hotel onsite and build a moving walkway to the casino across 140. Other than that, it's dead/dying.

But if you asked me 20 years ago, I would have bet on Westgate or Dartmouth falling first due to being older/smaller and Silver City sucking people away from the Brockton and FR/NB areas. It's a very easy drive up 140 or 24. I guess a big part of it might be due to the Taunton are just being less populated than those others. It was suitable for a big weekend shopping expedition, but less so as a place to run out on a Tuesday night after work for a large population of people.

IDK it's just hard to fathom, remembering back when the place was so new and hopping it seems like yesterday. Emerald Square is hurting as well, also once a big "destination". I don't see that lasting forever.

Well with respect to the brockton mall it's easier and faster to get to in brockton rather than south shore plaza. All things being said it's pretty clean.

I don't like to see empty store fronts but sometimes malls can redevelop as other things. There's a antique flea market at Eastfield mall in Springfield. It's actually pretty good. Housing I think could be another aspect because of demand but it depends what companies could come in. 90% of retail is brick and mortar, 10% is online and out of that 10% 5% is amazon. So while it can be argued they dominate online they still have a way to go for total retail sales. Home depot and lowes have been argued to be amazon proof. I can see a push towards more home based products and improvements.
