Hello,

I am new to this forum and this is my first post. Guru's - need your input on buying a Condo in Abington or Canton. Pro's vs Con's. We are young couple and looking for condos in these areas. How is abington town? I know Canton is much better in all ways, but there is very low inventory in Canton.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello and welcome. I'll hit on the prerequisites that I'm sure are coming:

1) What's your budget?
2) How important are schools?
3) What are your requirements re: the commute?
4) Does it have to be a condo or would single family work (most of the time condos are more inexpensive, but there may be some single family options depending on your other criteria)?

As you've pointed out, Canton is- in most respects- a more desirable town. Schools are quite a bit better in Canton. If we know your requirements and budget, maybe we can offer some alternatives.

Thanks for the quick reply.

1) Budget is under 400k
2) Schools are not important right now. We don't have kids yet.
3) We want to stay in southshore , 24 corridor. I work in south.
4) Ideally SFH will work best. But since the inventory is so less we are considering condo's too.

Reason for asking about Abington is - we stumbled upon a condo, which might be worth considering. We never considered Abington before, since the town itself is not great.

So our dilemma is - is it safe to consider town of abington?

Thanks.

I think Abington is ok and you'll probably get more house for your money. Where do you work? Not all of Canton is near route 24.

Given your criteria, I'd agree with Dm84. Abington is fine. Might also be worth at least trying in Easton, West Bridgewater, Canton, etc. The limited stock at 400k isn't surprising but you could get lucky. We have some posters from Stoughton on c-d who might be able to offer input. I feel like Stoughton is a decent value, but I've heard negative things mentioned here before. Avon, Holbrook and parts of Randolph might be fine too.

OP could easily buy a relatively nice SFH for $400k in Stoughton and a condo for less than $300k.

Abington is a level 3 school system.

Out of the mix I would look at West Bridgewater and Canton. I think that reasonable prices are going to be harder to find in Easton. I have heard stories about poorly managed complexes in Easton, too. There are not many condos in WB. Canton has more, but their prices are high. For the price point you could find a house. This is not Needham.

One of the big complexes in Abington is actually on the Brockton line. You have to drive through Brockton to reach it. The access to commuter rail in Abington is poor. You would rather drive to Randolph.
