Have him drive his car. Long road trips are a rite of passage. Also I recommend letting him figure some of this out himself. Doing it wrong is another rite of passage.

I agree. Forget shipping the car. Drive it.

Lol. In college we had ride boards to find people to drive across the country with. I'm sure the whipper snappers these days have something similar online.
I don't have much to add, but I would definitely drive it since your son probably has more time than money. I drove 1000 miles from home to college twice a semester back in college. For a young guy it's not a big deal. Chicago is a 1 day drive, but North Dakota is probably 2 days. There are large apartment complexes in Marlborough off I-495 that have short term leases. That requires buying furniture though. The most convenient solution would be to find a furnished summer sublet or post an ad on cragslist seeking a room in a house. I know a few families in Sudbury who spend summers on the Cape or in Maine and actually leave their house empty for most of the summer (lots of self-employed individuals with a stay-at-home spouse in Sudbury). You can probably find someone who's willing to sublet their house.
eebtee - my son is also at raytheon in sudbury - he has been looking for housing at Brandeis for a summer sublet - 20 minutes down Route 20. no luck so far. I am up here now picking up my daughter from college and drove around - beautiful area and they definitely need a car and since it is very suburban - close to the train to go into boston on weekends. I need to get a car quickly! I wish we could talk - have you had luck?
