Toscanini's and Christina's, both in Cambridge, are two of the only real "destination" places for ice cream here, at least within the urban core and out to 128. Lizzy's - main store in Waltham, small branch in Harvard Square - is a personal favorite. Ben & Jerry's, Emack & Bolio's, and JP Licks are chain stores with "premium" prices that have their devotees. Onetime giant Brigham's - which had a location just about everywhere, as Dunkin' Donuts does today - is now reduced to a single shop in Arlington Heights. (A few former franchises, such as in Belmont and Concord, operate under different names and still sell the product.) Their quality has stayed pretty good, but I doubt a cult following of the Last Store Standing is ever going to develop.

Why mention ice cream in the same "breath" as cannoli? Gotta get gelato!

Went to Toscanini's just before closing at 11 pm, a few hours ago. Always lots of creative flavors, but I like their Belgian Chocolate and Cocoa Pudding. One of the few ice cream stores locally where it's made on site? If I get a sundae, I appreciate their real whipped cream. Plus I hear they serve good coffee.

It was jammed: over 40 people, which adds to the excitement. Never have seen it that way, but it's nice spring weather plus colleges nearby winding down. Have been going since 1983!

I like Ranc's in Belmont Center if in the area.

PICCO in the South End is pretty good. Aside from what's already been mentioned that's all I can think of in the urban core. In the burbs there are a ton of ice cream spots.

I'm a Big fan of the Cookie Monstah truck (mostly at Dewey Square). They serve Richardson's Ice Cream and fresh baked cookies.

Cabots - I couldn't think of the name! It's in Newtonville.

I so miss the Steve's that used to be on Mass Ave near Newbury St. That was my go-to ice cream shop for hand-packed pints back in the '90s. I'm now a fan of FoMu (shops in JP & Allston), which is dairy-free and really amazing stuff.

Oh yes! I remember they also used to sell pints at select stores like L'il Peach.
