Why are you surprised by Winthrop? It's like 10 feet from Revere (#7) and Lynn (#3) and incredibly insular.

Remember this is per capita. A small town can get screwed for one or two bad years.

I'd like to quote this in response to pennyones accusation suburbs are exporting their drug problems, patients go to places where there is infrastructure to support them in Hospitals, they tend to be in cities because cities are hubs of transportation networks and easier to get to, but Where there is infrastructure they are using it.

That's also another reason why bigger cities have more deaths. In any case, to equate the number of death to the "upscale" quality of any place is just another way to whitewash the problem. Drug addiction is in every town and city across this state. The pretty little suburbs have the same grave problem, but they are able to hide, export and generally whitewash it by quietly shooing it away. On this particular epidemic, it's not helpful to say..."I live in a nice town and we don't have this problem.". You do. It could easily be your child, or your neighbor's child. And it's not just kids, but perfectly productive adults who get hooked on pain killers due to a physical accident or health issue etc.

I think the only way to start tackling this problem is for every city and town to have a certain level of social support within their borders. It should be mandated and required, and no town can nimby-duck this requirement. Then we'll see who really want to solve this problem and who just pay lip service to it. To start, a town with 10,000 people needs to have a mandated detox and rehab service center in its town center. Add another for every 15,000 increment after that. So a town like Milton with 27,000 should have at least two centers. You can locate them in and near the Milton Hospital. Quincy with 92,000 will have roughly 7 rehab centers spread across its many neighborhoods. I bet if we can all invest in this effort, the epidemic will stop growing and actually decline. These centers will not just treat addicts, but educate the public and do community outreach etc.
