penny and whatsnext: I have a suggestion. Why don't you two just block each other? You can still participate in the same threads, but won't see each other's posts.

Yes, it's usually a nice place for people to discuss what they like or dislike about a place. Usually, people focus on the positive and those are the ones who live in a certain place. If someone asked about Needham, I would expect someone who lived there, or worked there, or sold homes there, to reply. Likewise, I don't understand why some people would get so angry about me saying good things about Quincy, as I have a home there. Clearly I like living there but It doesn't mean that other places are bad. Civil discourse is getting harder to conduct these days.

It's always a good time to buy. As others have posted, as long as the purchase is made for the long haul and staying more than 7 years, buying is a smart decision. I think that one should always put down a good sized down payment. And be selective too. At any given time, there will be good properties to buy and others that aren't smart to own.

Also, I think a house should be purchased with the idea that it's going to be a home for someone in the long term, not just an investment. If you stay in a house and make a life of it, does it really matter what it was purchased for at the beginning? The most important thing is that it serves its function as your happy shelter, whatever that means for you.

Then why have you posted things like you hope the riff raff is kept out of quincy, you hope uneducated irish people are priced out, you hope more educated asians keep coming in. If you truly purchased your house in quincy for the long haul you shouldnt care what happens to the city because you made a decision to live there. If your home is your happy shelter then that should be your only concern. You made a decision to live amongst the uneducated riff raff

"You made a decision to live amongst the uneducated riff raff"..

Hahaha. Indeed. You should check out C-D's own data on Quincy's educational levels. Most normal people, homeowners or not, would want riff raffs kept out of their towns/cities. And, I have lived in our house for quite a number of years now. We don't have any plans to sell or move.

Also, the terms, "Irish" and "Asians" are both proper nouns, and given your Irish heritage, I would have expected you to show more respect for your own people.

Real estate is location, location, location. I would never sacrifice a desirable spot. I would compromise on the features of the house first. A kitchen or bathroom can be remodeled any time but the location can never be changed. That is why I went the route of a foreclosure in a great town.

The rule we followed for the Newton house was to buy the worst house in the best area. So we bought a fixer-upper and that was 20 years ago. The NH house though is a really special and unique property... and that goes along with my other real estate rule, no new construction for us, I'd rather the former owners put in and pay for all the amenities that we wanted. So the NH place has a barn that was converted into a finished garage and all the fenced in fields and paddocks are perfect for our dogs to run around in.

My collegaue and mentor, who is like another mother to me, did exactly the same thing after she retired two years ago. She and her husband purchased an old barn in Newbury, Vermont and completely renovated it into a really nice home with a huge tract of land for their four dogs and a horse. It's a beautiful place today and still relatively affordable after all the work done to it.
