Hi,

I paid excise tax of $150 to the City of Newton back in March of 2015 for my Nissan. I then sold my car in June, and bought a Honda.

I have now been charged with another Excise Tax bill for the Honda for $250.

Is there a way that I can get some money back from the initial $150 payment since I sold that car and didn't have it for the whole year? Or can the second Excise Tax bill for the Honda be somehow adjusted to note that I already paid $150 towards this year's Excise Tax?

How does it work if you sell your car and get a new one? Any advice? Thanks!

You can get an abatement for the Nissan. All you'll need to do is bring in your new registration or if you have different plates bring in the cancellation of the Nissans plates to the town/city hall and go to the tax office. They'll credit you approximately 6 months ( Jan- June ) and send you a check usually within a month.

This situation sort of happened to me. My wife has a car that we ended up putting in my name and when I re-registered it I was hit with another excise bill. I went in to pay for it and told them how we had already paid one this year. The clerk looked it up to confirm, she then had me fill out a form and about a month later a refund check arrived.

Go to your town hall and give it a try OP. even if you only get a partial it is better than nothing.
