Hello All
I have just moved to Worcester and am in search of a new place to stay in. Does anyone know any details about the newly opened Volk Lofts on Grove Street? Safety and being worth the rent are the paramount factors. Please do let me know if any of you can be of help. Thanks in advance

Voke Lofts is the former site of a vocational school. It is on the edge of downtown just behind Rte 9 and Lincoln Square. It has easy access to Route 290. Much of the surrounding area was formerly manufacturing. It has undergone a recent transformation as WPI has bought up most of the area for a mixed use development. WPI has put some academic buildings and a dorm there with its main campus just a few blocks away. They are also trying to lure bio-tech businesses and housing. There is already a Marriott Courtyard there and a 2nd hotel is being built. Institute park is nearby across from WPI. The Worcester Art Museum is also close by and it is an easy walk to downtown.

As far as safety, it is probably not bad considering its proximity to downtown. The worst part of downtown is the other end of Main Street (Main-South) heading toward Clark University. The best part of the city starts just a few blocks from Voke up Salisbury Street on the other side of WPI/Park Ave. The Voke area is for the most part a newly emerging neighborhood so there probably is not much past data/experience to go on. It was entirely different when the Voc-Tech, WITI, and Ziff Paperworld were all there. That neighborhood however no longer exists in that context. I would think that it can't be all that bad if a 2nd hotel is now being built there and WPI just began to house some of its students there. With the WPI buildings in the area, you may get twice the policing. In addition to the WPD (headquartered just a block away in Lincoln Sq), WPI has its own police force which patrols its campus.

Another benefit is that you will not be too far from the Highland Street business area (located between Lancaster and Berkshire) which has several restaurants and shops.

It also has MCPHS across the street in 2 directions. It's more or less surrounded by colleges.

A bit noisy though, with the highway right there and the train nearby as well.
