Haha, I can't even imagine! In our house anything that is a.) not working b.) scuffed/worn/dented or c.) not level (meaning everything) is considered "character". That includes the plastic we put over the windows in the winter...

Moving to one of the smart thermometers would probably give me that data. Almost worth it.
I just put in smart thermostats. The expense isn't too bad depending on how many zones you have. Plus, there are some that are under $200 and Mass Save gives a $100 rebate per thermostat.

Another plus of the smart units I that some of them have infinitely variable schedules. So instead of having 2 o 3 temperature changes a day you can have as may as you want. This works well in my house where we're in and out all day long.

My wife complains if I set the heat to 68 as well because she believes it should be at 78.

I work from home quite a bit and turn it down to 64 during the day. I find it comfortable.

I am not sure where or when I read up on changing the thermostat, but it seems to me the most efficient way to heat was to raise it a few degrees versus all at once. Like program it to go to 60 when one leaves in the AM say at 8am, then go to 63 at 4pm, 66 at 5pm, and finally to 70 at 6pm when you are getting home. We did this when living in MA and we had lower heating bills then did many of our neighbors and we all lived in identical townhouses.
