Those cities' days of being affordable are long gone, nothing new there.

Though being "affordable" is a relative term. Sure, buying a home on the state's "median" family income might be difficult in these two cities, but often, families have far more income especially when both parents work. I live in Quincy, and though the SFHs are now generally going in the 400K range, there are still some smaller places with some work needed that can become very nice homes in the high 300K. Also, Quincy has a big stock of senior housing and it's generally a city that's very accepting and accommodating to the elderly.

I think Waltham, for the most part, is no longer affordable for the "median income" household. I lived in Quincy until 2010, and at least until then, it was probably one of the most affordable towns inside the 128 belt...with the Red Line to boot. Might have changed since then.

No kidding. 2 bedroom apartments at The Merc rent for $3000/mo! That's my monthly mortgage for a 3000 sf house in Sudbury LOL.

Rents at these new, upscale apartment buildings are sky high.

I would never pay $3k for rent. Why throw money away when you can own for less.
