My husband and I are looking to start the house hunting process. We currently live in Brighton near Cleveland Circle, but are hoping to move out to a town with a more country/semi rural feel. Our budget is 300k tops right now, so we're looking at options in places like Canton, Stoughton, Easton, Millis, Holliston, etc. Do any of you live in these places? Thoughts/opinions? What would the commute be to Newton during rush hour?

I should also note that we don't have children yet, but are planning to soon, so schools are an important factor (but not the be all, end all).

With a budget of 300K, unfortunately you won't find a whole lot in those towns. And if you do they will most likely be small ranch/capes that need updating. Holliston is a nice town, with good schools. Quiet and semi-rural. Commute would be around 45-60 minutes to Newton.

Agreed, that is a tight budget for a house in those towns, but it is enough for a decent Condo in any of those areas. If you go the Condo route, you could add other towns with better proximity to Newton to the list. Natick, for example, always seems to have a few of the 2 bdrm, 1 ba ~800 SF range

If you can find something in Holliston or Millis for $300,000 - take it. Medway is another town in that vicinity that has some houses in that price range.

I can't imagine finding a single family home in any of those towns for under $300K.

Holliston would be tough.

It's really tough to think of a place within an hour of Newton (at rush hour) you could buy for that budget. You could go pretty far out on the Pike, but then you'd be paying tolls and gas too. I would seriously consider saving/waiting longer.

A little out of your budget, but possibly worth looking at if you'd consider a duplex

I did a quick search on Zillow, and there are a few. More so in Stoughton and Easton. Far from anything big or newer though.

That looks pretty nice and they just dropped the price $10,000 this week. Seems like a good way to get in to a town like Wayland.
