So it's a Monday, and I'm at work right now as I type this. But driving to work this morning, I couldn't help but notice that the highways I was traveling on were wide open! Even Rte. 128 southbound in Burlington, right at the Rte. 3 interchange, was moving just fine and dandy, when it's frequently a gridlock. Watching news this morning on Fox 25, when they were showing live shots of Rte. 1 in Saugus and I-93/Southeast Expressway in Dorchester, the traffic was moving, and based on the eyeball test, it looked like there was only 1/3 of the normal traffic volume for that time of the morning. Which leads me to ask, did everyone else get a paid day off today, similar to how they get paid days off at Thanksgiving and Christmas? (Well, everyone except the news anchors and meteorologists on TV, since the regular anchors/weatherpeople were on the air this morning.) And why would it be business as usual for me?

Now I'm not saying I "want" today off. After all, I don't see any significant reason why Columbus Day should be a significant holiday that warrants a day off from work, especially when compared to Thanksgiving or Christmas. But with high temps in the 70s today and the Bruins playing a 1 PM game, I'm feeling kinda bummed out being stuck in my office, especially since I work for a company that always makes the Boston Globe's "best places to work" list.

It's a federal holiday. Yes most people have off.

FWIW, I have off today but have to work Patriot's Day.

Most private companies would not have it off, but many people take it as a vacation day since schools/universities/federal agencies are closed.

My husband took a vacation day (works for a private company). I have it off (work for a university).

It's probably one of the more popular Monday holidays aside from memorial and Labor Day. On the other hand, hardly anyone has mok or veterans day off

My wife is over at her son's house taking care of the grandkids. That's because the day-care center is closed, but her son and his wife both have to work. It can be really awkward if some places--the ones you count on for services--give the employees a day off, but you work at a place that doesn't see it the same way.

Not every university is closed. There are quite a few that don't have Columbus Day. I drove my son back to his school this morning so he could make his 10 AM class and a friend of his was headed back to Worcester last night for an 8 AM. Luckily there wasn't any traffic this morning.

Patriot's Day was yesterday. In Dallas.

The university I work for has class today, but staff have a floating holiday where they can choose to use the holiday or come to work and choose another day off at a later time. My entire department is off, for instance, but others are running with skeleton crew. Professors are in, however.

When I was in college, we got Columbus Day off in 2 of my 4 years, as part of a 4-day weekend (getting Monday and Tuesday off). But in 2 of those years, the 4-day weekend was on the weekend after Columbus Day. Don't know why.

While the roads were wide open and schools are closed today, another poster mentioned that the Stock Market is open. And the MBTA (subway, bus, and commuter rail) is running its regular Monday schedule. I just wanted a general idea of who was off and who wasn't, since driving to work this morning it felt like I was one of the only people on the road.
