I recently got a job in Waltham and am currently commuting from Easton. In the next year and a half or so, I'll be looking to move closer to work and I wanted to start my research now so I can make the best decision.

Ideally, I'd like to live within 30 minutes of Waltham. My budget is around 925/mo. The most important factors to me are:

- safe neighborhood
- off-street parking
- cats allowed
- at least heat/hot water included

Any suggestions as to where I should start looking?

Craigslist for roommates.

That or craiglist for studios. You might get lucky and find a small studio for that. But heat won't be included, neither will off street parking (more than likely).

Honestly, there are places around, but competition is fierce, and getting off street parking and heat included? Yeah, that's a unicorn. For that budget to include heat and parking, you're probably looking living with 1-2 roommates.

If you keep your eyes nailed to Craigslist you might find a private rental in someone's basement. But, at that price it's rare. I got lucky and landed an in-law apt many years ago for 850. I haven't seen anything as cheap again (i was looking for another apt to move to about 3 yrs ago until I gave up and bought my own place).

Geographically speaking, Waltham itself is as good a place to start as any. But I agree with the other posters, a place to call your own at that price point will not be easy to come by.

Unfortunately, rent has skyrocketed in that area. That's about my budget and I have been looking for the past few years for studios anywhere that is commutable to Waltham. It hasn't happened yet, and in fact, many bedrooms in shared apartments are approaching that rent particularly when you factor in utilities.
