We are gearing up for our first winter as New Englanders and considering a seasonal snow plowing plan. Knowing about how many days it snows on average would be helpful for our analysis -- can anyone point us in the right direction for this information, please? We live in Andover.

This table shows how many days per year there is measurable snowfall:

Average Annual Snowfall Totals in Massachusetts - Current Results

Keep in mind the number of days your plow driver shows up will be far less than this. My plow doesn't show up unless there's at least a couple inches of snowfall or so.

Looks like we can assume about 20 on average. Thank you for that, MikePRU! Winter is coming...

No, that's too high. We might get 20 days of snow, but most of them will be 1-2" which can be hand shoveled. During last year's record snow season, I think my plow guy only came out about 10 separate days (but multiple passes on most of those days).

I'm trying to block out last winter.

I'd rather re-live the past in my mind than face reality this year. Did you shovel today? It was only 2", but I was completely unprepared this morning. I was going crazy looking for my shovels. I finally found them in the shed and started pushing the snow, but it was so wet/heavy that I literally couldn't push it more than 20 feet (it's 40 feet from my garage door to the closest strip of grass). I ended up using a 2-stage snow blower which was completely overkill for the job and still left 1/2" of slush everywhere. I wanted to use my single stage, but I couldn't get it started. I thought I was going to miss the last rush hour commuter rail train, so I stole my wife's SUV with winter tires and drove like a madman. I hate winter

Normally, the guy who plows my driveway also shovels my front walk. I typically am just responsible for throwing down some salt. When I drove my oldest to pre-school today I think I saw two plows while driving across town. So, I wasn't sure my plow service was coming and I decided to at least shovel the front walk. Wow! That was some seriously wet and heavy snow. I can see why you got out your snowblower.

This is fascinating avg snow data. TAUNTON pops out at me as the anti-snow belt. Cape avg nearly same, must be the ocean storms

When I lived in Andover and my business was in North Reading, my snow plow guys plowed when the city did which meant about about 4 inches. In the lean snow years the 4in became 3in and in a heavy snow year the 4in became 5in. I paid each per plow. Some years my plow bills reached $1K. Other years it was less then $200. It is always a crap shoot but I opted for a per plow payment versus a fixed amount as who knew who would be in business year to year. My HOA went with a fixed amount per year for budgeting purposes. Some owners cried foul on a less snowy year. Sometimes you just cannot win.
