Do I have to register the car my self, or can my wife register the vehicle? She is not on the registration but is on my insurance etc. Anybody have experience with this?

Do you mean register the car in her name or physically go to the Registry with the paperwork?

Anybody can go the registry. As long as all the paperwork is ready, she should not have a problem.

Yes, anyone can. If you buy a car from a dealership, they send a gopher boy to the RMV with paperwork to register the car on the purchaser's behalf.

Ah no - there isn't a gopher doing that any longer. Most dealerships now are given a stack of license plates and registration stickers and connect directly to the registry to do the registration work. That's part - albeit a small part - of the documentation fee most dealers add on.

. . . but not relevant for this discussion, because I know there are smaller/independent used car dealers that send humans to the RMV, at least some of the time.

That's why I said most dealers. But many used cars are sold at new car dealers, they can do the paperwork on-line with the RMV as well.
