Hi,

I've been offered a job in Hingham. I now live in Salem. Is it possible, (or reasonable) to commute from Salem to Hingham. (route 3a)

Thanks!

it is not reasonable- it is INSANITY! It would make more sense to invest in a boat (not joking)

Haha,

funny, it's a boat-company.
I really need to take the job. It's challenging, and the pay is decent. particularly since i'm laid off, and currently jobless in a tanking economy.

I'm thinking of working a 10:30 to 6:30 shift, which means i'd leave Salem at 9:30?

Is it making any sense, or am I moving A friend works near the Quincy police station, so I'll be carpooling. I'd be driving a few minutes down the road on 3a

How are you getting from Quincy to Hingham? It's still a ways down to Hingham. Are you taking the train? Boat?

That is one long, scary commute!

I would think about moving if I were you. That's going to be the commute from Hell.

I just got back from a house hunting trip in Boston (and within 30 miles) and after being stuck in traffic more often than not, I definitely agree with the previous responses. That being said, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and do what you gotta do. The fact that all this traffic exists is testament to that. Perhaps you could take the job while actively searching for something closer to home; or look for housing closer to work. Only you know the state of your finances. If you're pulling your hair out wondering how you're going to pay the bills, take the job. JMHO.

The cost of the commute (100 miles each day) will punch you in the pocket too. I would recommend moving closer- maybe getting an apartment with your friend in Quincy?

Either that or see if you can loan a boat!

There is no earthly reason to attempt the commute you describe. If you have a house paid for in Salem or have kids in school or something, it's still a hideous commute. Not something most local people would even consider. There's no way. I'd say you're moving, and it will be much much better. Congratulations on getting the job, by the way- a friend of mine just got something good after a long period of looking, and it is such a relief and joy to him.

Well, You've all been incredibly helpful. Please keep it up.

I don't own anything. And, I don't have any kids.
I also don't have any financial commitments. (just finished student loans, don't have any CC debt, own my car)

I've been with my G.F. for 4 years. we're not married, but won't be seperating any time soon. She works on Cherry Hill in Beverly. The challenge in moving is it needs to be somewhere in-between.

The employer would let me do a "flex time" where I would come in 7am and leave at 3ish,

Google maps says hingham is something like 25 miles from Saugus... Is that making more sense?

Saugus and Hingham are 35 miles apart. But geographical distance is not the issue. TRAFFIC is the issue. Living somewhere in-between could make things miserable for the both of you.

Give the flex time thing a shot- although you will need to get on the road at about 5am. If it isn't working then you can at least make a decision with your gf collectively.

best of luck!
