...we wanted to take her and her room mate out to dinner at a local, preferably non chain restaurant.

My wife went there 30 years ago and there was a middle eastern restaurant. We can't find it.

Any suggestions? Anything near the University? Yes, we know all about it, but there used to be some little ethnic places in or near South Main.

Daughter eats fish but no meat.

We have eaten at a cute little breakfast place on South Main, but we were looking for something that would be open at night and have more ambiance.

We've eaten at the Plaza Azteca. We have one here in Ohio.

The middle eastern restaurant that you are likely thinking of was the El Morocco. It closed back in 1994.

Most of the better restaurants in Worcester are found along Shrewsbury Street. The best seafood restaurant is the Sole Proprietor on Rte 9/Highland Street over by WPI.

You can still have Middle Eastern at El Basha on Park Ave. It is about a mile and a half from the campus down Park Ave. Here are some interesting places Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed

There's another location on Lake @ Belmont/Rte 9. Not the closest thing to Clark though

Sahara Restaurant on Highland St has been around for years and has good Middle Eastern food. The Boyton and The Sole Proprietor on Highland are also very good.

I am Warren Zee's wife, who attended Clark in the late 70s early 80s. That picture brings back memories, and seeing the El Morocco dark and empty, makes me a little sad.
Funny thing - I grew up in the suburbs of NYC and I'd never had Middle Eastern food before coming to Worcester!

There were pizza and grinder places near CU back then. That doesn't seem to be the case now. I wonder if chain restaurants took them over.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, everyone. There still appear to be some good options.
A little aside -
When we were up there visiting, we needed something from a department store. I asked a woman how to get to the Galleria. She looked at me as though I was insane.

Apparently, the mall hasn't been there for a long time either. I forget what year, but it was a long time ago.

Wow.

The Sole Proprietor on Highland is your best bet.

The Galleria closed in '94. That area is all being redeveloped now.

I am WPI Class of 1985 so I was in Worcester in and around your college time. My roommate's girlfriend went to Clark and I spent some time over there. I can recall just a few places back then on Main Street. I think Notis Pizza had a location there. There is not a lot around there now as the Main South area is rougher than when you attended Clark. My favorite Clark spot is however still there:
