I'm from Westport, MA and it seems like it's what you'd be looking for. However, land values are a little high, but there are cheaper properties near 195 in the northern part of the town. Check out Tiverton, RI or North Dartmouth as well.
Not really accurate. The worst places in Atlanta will be better than the best places in fall river.

I used to live in Sandy Springs which is one of the most affluent suburbs of Atlanta. According to city-data, Sandy Spring's crime rate is nearly 8x higher than the small MA town I currently live in now and only 2x safer than Fall River. Obviously comparing specific data points is useless to the OP. I was simply saying in general any small town in MA is much safer than any small town in GA. The OP should do a search on city-data (the website, not the forum) for crime statistics on a few different towns in MA and GA as a comparison.
If you get off of Route 6 a bit, there are some great rural areas in Swansea and Seekonk. Swansea has a pretty historic town center along Main St. with some nice old homes, a library, and big old trees lining the streets. It's a big departure from the suburban retail hell that is Route 6 or the Swansea Mall (which is what most people associate with Swansea). One of our favorite places is Simcock Farm in Swansea. Good ice cream and neat farm animals for the kids. Swansea's a gem. In addition to being fairly rural and picturesque north of Route 6, Swansea also has some frontage on Mt Hope Bay (salt water, ocean access). Seekonk also has some nice rural pockets. Again, get off of Route 6 (and 44). Rehoboth is the nicest in the area, but I would definitely check out first, simply because I think the value is tough to beat. Dighton, especially close to 44, may be a candidate as well. It has some nice rural pockets.
I don't think any of those towns are too comparable to Lakeville (I'm from Assonet, went to Apponequet in Lakeville). Swansea's probably the closest, but Lakeville doesn't have anything approaching Route 6 and Swansea doesn't have the lakes and ponds. The build environment, especially north of route 6, is similar however.
I'd also imagine that since the OP is originally from Middleborough, they probably have a good idea of how places like Fall River or Taunton compare to places in Georgia.
Within 25 miles? The entire state save for Hopkinton, Westerly, and Charlestown. Plus a good chunk of eastern Connecticut (Putnam, Killingly, Brooklyn, Sterling).
If you go up 146 just over MA border these towns are VERY quiet woods, i guess rural bUT im no expert. I.e. Douglas, Uxbridge, northbridge.
Rehoboth is an excellent suggestion tho. 1 stop light in entire town
Those towns are a good haul from Providence, especially in bad weather. In addition to the MA towns mentioned of Seekonk, REhoboth, Dighton, Swansea; I would look at Foster-Glocester, Scituate, Western Cranston (and Johnston) in RI.

35 minutes is a haul? Wow I wish I had your commute haha I'd do backflips.
Also, OP asked for MA.
RI opens up a whole basket of addl options
