Hi Everyone, My neighbors have been talking with our town officials and police dept on adding a street light to our street. There had been some occurrences of break-ins and questionable people in the area. Our side of the neighborhood is right at the town line and has dead-end streets (that don't connect to the next town). Our street deadends at a cul-de-sac.

The town's response is the following and they have to wait for their legal counsel's advice whether adding the street light is allowed.
"the roadways in that neighborhood is not an accepted way in the town".

What does that even mean?

Best guess is that your road is a private road so its residents have responsibility for the upkeep. Is this possible? Why would neighbors or you not be aware of this already?

Good luck.

We never considered ours street a private road. After all, the town snow-plows it, trash truck comes to pickup in front of each house and mail is delivered. I've hope this doesn't 'wake-up' the town people and we end up losing all those services on this street.

I've seen true private roads where the residence pay for snowplowing and road maintenance. There would be a private road sign as well. This hasn't been our case.

My take is the road is a private way.

Doesn't help that that sentence is not grammatically correct either.

It has to be officially "accepted" by the town. It apparently hasn't been, yet.

About par for the course for MA public officials, unfortunately.

We have private ways that are plowed, get mail, etc. I have no idea what makes them private, since they receive all the services that a regular road does.

For example, here's a list of Accepted roads in the town of Wellesley: http://www.wellesleyma.gov/Pages/FOV...ts_2015-02.pdf

I know what an "Ancient Way" is, but I never heard the term "Paper" streets before.

I remember when our street was new, we received mail (because that has nothing to do with the town, it's federal) but the builder had to plow the street until the town accepted it.

Typically, it's up to the developer of the street to petition the municipality to accept the street. Often services to an unaccepted way but it is still owned by the developer.

A paper street is a publicly owned right of way that doesn't have a street built on it.
