My job used to take me anywhere between Boston, Providence, Worcester and Manchester, NH so I had to cover a similar area as you do now. The worst traffic is heading into Boston on I-93 and I-90 (Mass Pike), so you want to avoid that as much as possible. There's also horrible traffic on I-95 (Rt-128) heading towards the Mass Pike from both the North and the South. Location-wise, I think the best area to commute from would be near the I-95 / MassPike interchange. I really enjoyed living in Natick at the time and thought it offered the best commute and schools for the money. You can hop on the Pike to get into either Worcester or Boston, but also take back roads to I-95 which I guess robr2 doesn't know about since he's not a local. From Natick you can either get onto the Totten Pond exit if you're heading North or the Rt-135 exit if you're heading south without sitting in any traffic to avoid the mess at the I-90/I-95 interchange. But I do agree that if you will be spending more time on 128 than you will be going into Boston/Worcester, then a town like Waltham might be a better choice.

Rentals are rare in Wayland, but there is one on Craigslist right now...next door to Natick and would be suitable for your dogs and desire to not be on top of your neighbors. Only $100 over your budget. Nice town. Crime won't be an issue. It's likely bigger than you want, but I think this is a pretty good deal. I lived in Wayland years ago and liked it there. Near Mass Pike and route 9, you can get to 128 from either the Pike or Rt. 30. Nice town beach on Lake Cochituate. Close to all the shopping on Route 9. Great school system.
