Hi all,

I am moving to Boston May 15-23 and need to find an apartment very soon.

My preferences are:
- I will be working in Harvard medical school as a post doc. I want to live in suburbs as that will be relatively inexpensive but it should be close to train communication and within 45 minutes of train communication. I am a married person.
- Need a studio or one bed room budget $1000-$1300
- Somerville, Allston, Quincy, Arlington
- Need to be closer to a decent Indian community
- Please let me know any sublease is possible

- Any recommended areas?
- Any recommended specific apartments?

Thank you all.
Appi and Harika

Craigslist.org is usually a good place to find subleases. I would recommend finding a place along the D light rail MBTA line. That should provide you with an easy commute into Longwood medical center where Harvard Medical School is located. You might be able to find a sublet near the Cleveland Circle area as lots of BC/BU/Northeastern students will be moving out for the summer. You could also take a look at the Mission Hill/Brookline Village area. Allston is also a good option if you would be willing to take a bus and not a train to the Longwood Medical Area. Also look at places near the D line in Newton.

Will you have any access to a car? A car will make it much easier to find an apartment that fits your budget requirements.

If you do have access to a car than I would recommend Waltham. There are two Indian grocery stores in Waltham and the city is cheaper than what you would find closer to Boston.

A one bedroom in a modest house in Quincy will likely be close to $1,300 plus. I know someone in North Quincy whose rent for a one bedroom in a modest house went to $1,300 this year. He couldn't afford it, so found something near for a bit less.

I'd think a one bedroom in Allston is $1,700 minimum? In an older, basic building, that is.

I know two people that pay less than that for those Comm Ave apartment buildings in both Allston and Brighton. Not $1300 though, but $1500-1600. $1300 is doable in places, but without feet on the ground and a quick pounce, forget about it.
