Hi All,
My wife and I have our first year anniversary coming up next month. Unfortunately she is taking summer classes, so we can't really go very far, but we might be able to do a 3 day weekend. Anyone know of any scenic getaways that aren't too far from Northampton? Beaches are preferred, but not necessary.

Lake George in New York is beautiful and a popular summer destination.

York, Maine is a beautiful place with great beaches. There are inns, B&Bs, and loads of other nice places to stay. Nice scenery, lighthouses...it's a very romantic place. York is in the very southern part of Maine so it doesn't take a horribly long time to get there from Northampton. Also, if you are in a shopping mood, there are outlets in nearby Kittery. Then, of course, the Ogunquit Playhouse isn't too far either.

You could also head south and stay somewhere in CT, maybe visit Mystic Seaport. There are things to do like boat trips to the Thimble Islands and there's good seafood and beautiful towns like Essex.

If you wanted something really close by and you are interested in history, you could stay around Sturbridge and go to Old Sturbridge Village and eat and stay at the Publick House. That would be a lot less driving.

I'm in central MA so the fiancee and I suffer through similar debates as to where to spend a weekend.

Our preferred choices:

Rye/Portsmouth area (2.75-3.25 hours from western MA) . Grab a hotel and dinner in downtown Portsmouth, hit Jenness beach in the morning/early PM. The drive on 1 from North Hampton to Portsmouth is beautiful.

RI bay area (1.75-2.5 hours from western MA). Grab a hotel and dinner in downtown Providence or Newport, and leverage the shoreline throughout the RI bay. Bristol and Tiverton are quite nice drives.

The south beaches of RI are also good (Misquamicut and nearby).

I would also suggest the York/Wells/Ogunquit area. My family vacations there every summer and my kids love it. The wife and I love it too. Always something to do or just sit back and enjoy the beaches.
