Hi there, I am moving to Wakefield this summer. I work in Needham. I am trying to figure out what will be both the best route and the best times to leave for my commute each day (in both directions). I realize the commute can be quite "hellish" but wondering if anyone has mastered daily driving between these two towns. I have a tad bit of flexibility in my schedule as long as I reach 40 hours per week, but with that, I have to consider school drop off and pick up (before school opens as early as 7am and extended day program is over at 6pm -- UGH I hate the idea of leaving them there ALL DAY, M-F). I am assuming there are no "back roads" that will get me to and fro faster than I-95.

Is my commute going to be as bad as I think it will be? Any and all insight, and especially experience, is welcome. Thank you

The Waze app will be your friend. It may very well route you inland across Belmont, Arlington and Stoneham, entirely avoiding Route 128.

That commute will be lousy, however. I hope you enjoy Wakefield!

Thanks gf2020. I plan on using waze for sure. I've already tested it out during different times of day to see what it will say. I think I'm looking at 1-1.5 hours each way on average. I don't really think anything short of dropping my kids of at school at 6:30am (ha!) will make it any better
:-(. I have an apartment lined up for August. The move will save me a LOT of $$ every month (in rent and private school $) but totally reconsidering for the sake of my sanity. My commute now is only about 20 min. Grrrr....

So you have 11 hours to work 8 hours, take a 30 min lunch, and do a 1.25 hr commute each way? That's exactly 11 hours, which leaves zero wiggle room for accidents, rain, snow, and other things that cause will cause your commute to take longer than average. Sorry, but this doesn't sound like a good idea to me. If you have such a long commute why do you have to do both pickup and drop off? Your best bet is to split kid duty with your significant other or move to another closer suburb that's cheaper. Look at Dedham or Norwood if you want to save some money on rent.

This is a horrible commute that can become much worse if anything goes wrong along the way.

Even a well placed car accident could add an hour to the trip. And unlike winter weather you can't plan for stuff like that.

Why did you do this to yourself when there are towns closer to Needham in the same league as Wakefield (cost, schools, overall niceness)?

If you are the sole person responsible for the kids I would really reconsider. Norwood, dedham, or even millis or medway on back roads would be better and still in your price range. I used to go from Norfolk to Needham on back roads and it was a fairly pleasant drive.

Is this apartment in Wakefield owned by a close friend or relative who is cutting you a HUGE deal on the rent? I'm curious as to how you chose to live so far away if your job is in Needham. What happens if, for example, one of your kids gets sick and you need to go get him? Will you be able to make up that 40 hours on the other days if your commute is so long?
