My wife & I are looking to start a family & the prices are ridiculous for housing in Mass. We started looking in other areas, but if we look to remain we are looking at towns with good schools that are more affordable. We currently live in a 1200 square foot house with 1 bathroom. We're looking at 1500-2000 with a 2nd bathroom for about $400k. Sharon is way too expensive with taxes. Mansfield, Walpole & Foxboro (where we live) doesn't seem to have the area or quality of house we would want. Anybody have any suggestions?

For reference my wife's work is in Jamaica Plain & mine is in West Bridgewater.

You need to accept that you won't be in a top school district with that budget. If you absolutely won't bend on school quality you're going to have to go beyond 495.

Can you start your family in your current home and then upgrade in 6 yrs when your child is ready for K? Then you can use that time to save up for a larger downpayment/house.

You aren't getting that for 400k in Dedham or Braintree. Weymouth, yeah, but the other two no way.

So you want cheaper than where you live now but better quality schools and a nicer home? I can't see that happening.

You CAN get into top school districts inside 495 for $400k, but you will have to compromise on house size.

West Bridgewater, though, has a lot of nice house for the money.

Honestly I'd stay put until your kid is old enough to think about schools.

Looking for a nicer home while maintaining a good school. I know there is some give and take.
