It is, really, just a bit nicer.

Not even my really willing to spend money on dining experience foodie friends think places like Juliet's or Journeyman are worth the money. I would so much rather have Sherman's back.

Newer/more interesting places always get priced out, heck, look at Portsmouth, the best restaurants are in Kittery where it was cheaper to secure locations for young restaurateurs.

Can't agree it is spot on. Just even a quick look, Night Shift over Trillium? That's just scream we have no idea what the blank we're talking about.
Personally I agree that putting Night Shift over Trillium is pretty bad, but my wife doesn't like Trillium Congress St - too dank, but she loves Night Shift Santilli. And to be fair that was "best brewery" not "best beer" and Night Shift has a cool space.

Best brewery means the best beer maker, the best brewer.

The best spot to hang out is completely different, and that seems to be what they were voting on. They should call it best brewery space or something. Otherwise you'd have azzhats voting Medusa over Treehouse.

I closely follow the restaurant scene and have noticed that the new restaurant openings in Somerville and Cambridge don't seem as unique as they used to be.[/b] I guess that happens when rent becomes very expensive. I used to venture out frequently to Somerville and Cambridge to eat, but nothing has appealed to me recently. Some of my old favorites are gone as well (Gargoyles ). Timberline and semiurbanite, would you agree with me or are the newish restaurants still worth going to?
i read this week that a sushi taco place was going to open in Davis - is that unique?

The whole "smart growth" "eat play work" thing exists everywhere from Oregon to Kentucky, and Assembly Row offers no distinction.
I'll date myself - I spent a lot of time there when it was called Studley's. It was gritty and cheap - perfect for a poor college kid.

It's neither now, and it is way overpriced for what it is, IMO.

There sure doesn't seem to be many broke college students around these days, either.

Hipsters and 1%'ers are morphing into one annoying population. The hipsters in Cambridge and Somerville are largely tech babies who like to dress like lumberjacks and sport beards. A truely "hip" scene including artists, musicians and creative types is rapidly vanishing in Camberville due to the cost of living. I agree with the comments that Gloucester is developing a nice scene (and also a good place to invest in real estate).

Bingo. As commercial real estate prices skyrocket we are getting more restaurants that are less creative and just flat out overpriced to be regular haunts.

Sarma and Table are excellent, however they are certainly priced to match. Waypoint I will contend is overpriced and the food is unnecessarily complicated. Seafood is supposed to be fresh and stand on it's own. I am hard pressed to taste the seafood in most of their dishes.

For Boston it is a new thing. There are lots of these poke and sushi burrito () places in NYC and on the west coast that have become all the rage over the past 18 months. I think there are a few others that will be opening in this area. I think it's the latest fad that will likely come and go.

Hardly a mutually exclusive group. Loads of the people around here playing music and making art are in the tech industry. It provides them the money to live here, get studio space, rehearsal space, etc and the flexibility to play out.

Of course cost is an issue in general, the last group I produced relocated to NC in part to COL even though they had a strong network here. It just isn't mutually exclusive, and we shouldn't expect it to be as creativity is heavily involved in both arenas.

I know of a few swinger families in somerville. Real freaky people. Not my kind of family friendly but it might be someone else's.
