This post is just a discussion about Newtonville, hopefully it helps newcomers to decide between Newtonville north of the turnpike and south of the turnpike

From what I can tell, Newtonville actually spans north and south of the turnpike. The north part bounded by Albemarle road and Crafts.. all up to the Charles River.

What are the differences between thew north and south part?
- north is closer to commuter train/bus and supermarkets
- south is closer to the high school
- in the north part, you could walk to both elementary and middle school and an highschooler could bike to highschool
- the housing stock?
- people are more snobby? easy going in north or south?
- north has easy access to charles river bike path and trails
- north house prices are cheaper?

While Newtonville is bisected by the Mass Pike, Nonantum is actually the village that runs from Crafts St. up to the Watertown border.

If you look at the neighborhood council map link below (shaded in blue), it shows newtonville north as a triangular area between crafts and albemarle up to charles river.

I wonder why there is no official map on the newton website

I don't see a huge difference in the type of people or general quality of life between the half mile in either direction of the pike. It's a great neighborhood, with a nice village center and good transit access. Easy to see why it commands high real estate values.

Why and when did they drop the name Silver Lake and go with Nonantum. I used to love them trashy Silver Lake girls.

It's possible that "Nonantum," as a native American name, pre-dated the Silver Lake name. But, in any case, the Lake is gone; that could be the real reason.

This is correct - I used to live in Nonantum. Albemarie Rd is actually the border of Nonantum and West Newton. Newtonville goes up to Rt-16 and Craft Street at its northern border.

Newtonville north of the Pike has more of a traditional Newton village feel and is probably more desirable for today's Newton buyer due to better highway and train access as well as being walkable to shops. It's also known for its Victorian houses. The south part feels more like a generic suburb IMO.

I know there are no official "borders" for the villages (and that it really doesn't matter), but I think "Newton" does consider north of Rt-16 as still "newtonville". Just throwing this out there for "academic reasons"

look at the website for F.A Day Middle School which is in Albemarle Field. The address is listed as Newtonville (bottom of page)

And also the Newton council map:
