Hello,

I am looking for details about commuting back and forth from Newburyport to Westborough. I know that it's a nightmare commute -- but I'm interested in hearing the in-depth details. I want to know exactly what we will be facing when we move to Newburyport...

How long will it really take? How early should one leave and/or return in order to save a bit of time? Is it a longer commute in the summer months? What's the best route going out and then returning?

Helpful to hear from anyone who has suffered through this commute (and even from those without personal experience).

Thank you very much!

That's about 70 miles each way. I love Newburyport and I grew up in Westborough but that's just not a realistic commute. Life is too short to have a commute that long.

Why would you ever do that?

Foolish to consider this. I hope you can work remote.

I would imagine that this commute could reasonably match google maps citation of 1hr 20min if you could leave early enough to be past the junction of 93/495 at/before 730am. The winter, of course, is going to turn that into a 3hour ordeal but you knew that already. On the way home you will have a similar issue with the 93/495 junction, you will need to be east of it by 5:15 at the latest. I hope your employer is flexible.

I work in Westborough. I want to live on Cape Ann. Newburyport, Gloucester, Rockport, etc. I like em all.

It is not feasible. I explored it.

Yeah, I was in Salem (25 miles south of Newburyport) about a month ago and did the drive from Westborough in about an hour without any traffic. I can't imagine that drive with traffic and horrible weather plus an additional 25 miles.

I bet after one week the OP would probably want to commit suicide.

I happen to agree, I'd never do it, but definitely allow for folks who might see the cost/benefit differently for any number of reasons. I work in Chelmsford, and have colleagues who commute 4 days/week from Douglas, MA and Cranston, RI.

A day or three per week or EVERY day? Every day sounds just heinous.

That stretch of 495 is a nightmare in the summer, and can be at almost all times of the day. Please don't do this to yourself.
