Brockton is way too divided to gentrify and the commuter rail can't gentrify a place, only rapid transit. Brockton is primarily filled with Emma grant working-class families and then has a very large component of old somewhat conservative -if not stodgy Massachusetts residents who don't see Eye to Ye with immigrants on almost any issue. There are also serious issues with drugs and crime very serious issues. Every town in every city has a smattering of criminals but the fact that criminals actively looking to relocate directly into Brockton is a major problem and now you have a smaller number of professional families or professionals in general then does criminal types . I would say Brockton hasn't been better than Dorchester Roxbury and Mattapan in about five years (Wnd of the Great Recession) and probably won't ever be again . Add to that a lackluster school system in Brockton, a lack of SAFE night life and a very spread out city with only a weak bus system running through it.

"Massachusetts is, by all accounts, a very special place in this country. You’ve got a ton of history and culture. Its residents are proud Americans with a rich sense of passion and purpose. Avid sports fans, and true-blood, die-hard folks, without whom, this nation wouldn’t be the same.
And then you have places like Brockton and Taunton. Some real pits.
After analyzing the 224 most populous cities, we came up with this list as the 10 worst places in Massachusetts"

Ware is closer to Worcester, let's not give Springfield any more negative vibes. It has enough going wrong within it's own borders.

Economically depressed does not = ghetto. I would much prefer walking through DT Ware at 2 am than MANY neighborhoods in Boston.

I lived in Ware for about two years while I was in grad school. It was a cheap place to live but it was horrible even back then. It's in Hampshire County so Northampton is its country seat. It used to be industrial and when Quabbin Reservoir was built, that cut it off from the rest of the county. So it's just out there, mouldering. It was a horrible and backward place.
