I did visit Newburyport both trips and loved it for every reason you state. My concern however is jobs. Also visited Amesbury , the “alternate” to Newburyport. And did go up to wells Maine. I love and have always loved New England.

Amesbury is nice too and more affordable than Nbpt. I'd also steer you to Dover, NH for value - it's as nice as Amesbury, and more affordable yet. Dover is not a great location if you plan to commute to Boston/Cambridge, but if you can find work in the seacoast NH area (no state income tax, btw!), it's a great town.

Hi - Dover is in many ways similar to Amesbury. It's a river town, old mill town. Housing stock and some of the people a little more rough around the edges than in the top-tier towns, but we're talking a healthy mix of blue collar people, not ghetto people. It's big enough to have a supermarket towards the outskirts (and Dover also has a hospital), but the historic town center is very walkable and has some interesting cafe's and shops. There are nice parks in the area, and it's a short drive to the beach or to the fancy harbor town (Portsmouth plays that role up there).

P.S. Here are some photos I took of a park 10-15 mins drive from Dover...

Not sure what line of work you are in, but some of the bigger employers in seacoast NH would be the 3 hospitals in Dover, Portsmouth and Exeter, and the University of NH has its main campus in Durham, and then of course there are supermarket chains, retail and hospitality jobs as the area gets a lot of tourists, and the residential construction industry is more active there than it is in eastern MA. Sprinkled around will be all kinds of light industry, the occasional tech, engineering or environmental firm... that's what I am aware of anyways, but I am sure that there's more than is on my radar...

P.S. There is also a good-sized naval shipyard in Portsmouth where I believe they repair and upgrade ships and subs, they probably hire some civilians for this work too...

Have you considere a 55 plus apartment community? Haven't viewed it and don't know anything other than the website info. Rent is a little higher than your budget but dogs and cats are permitted and I believe Westwood is a very nice area. Not sure about commute and job opportunities in Westwood though.

Yes, Westwood is a nice community, very safe. The location would be convenient to the NYC train, too. Those apartments don't look that nice to me, though.
