Buying a used boat is fine, but if you can afford it, purchase a new motor. Keep up your maintinence, etc.
A "boat unit" is a unit of cost for boat maintenance or repair. It's $1,000. In 2017, there is no such thing as a 1 boat unit problem.

The email I got a year ago in March said "Oh yeah, the mechanic noticed a problem decommissioning your engine." One engine rebuild later, I was good to go. With an inboard, the costs ripple through everything so it's far cheaper to just do a rebuild. Engine mounts. New prop shaft. New controls and all the labor to install the new controls. 6 boat units for the rebuild. A new one would have been 15 boat units.

Then there was the email I got a few years before that: "The sailmaker washing your main condemned it." I emailed the manager of the loft that makes the sails for my boat. I've known the guy since I was a little kid. I was best man in his brother's wedding. They had one in inventory but no friends & family discount. 2+ boat units for a new sail.

All I can think of is money and work. An aunt and uncle had many boats over the years, starting with a sailboat, getting bigger and better, and ending up with a houseboat. They would "boat hop."

She absolutely hated it. The boat was like a wife to him. He was always there, scraping barnacles or something. She was always packing stuff to take on it.

I owned boats for many years. We always enjoyed our time when out on the boat. However, it's a short season here in New England and with kids going off to college and competing demands on our leisure time, we sold our most recent boat 3 years ago. We'll have a boat again in the future, it just needs to be at the right place and time.

I think that's the kind of boat we are looking for(on your picture).. when I say "we" I mean my husband. He just does not like asking and researching ))
He has some previous experience with boats... just not in the USA, so no idea about regulations/rules/repairs/storage etc

Don't do it.

The maintenance and liability are a massive headache especially if you have no experience with this. Better idea, get a friend who owns one.

You can always join Freedom Boat Club. Freedom Boat Club You pay a monthly fee and can reserve a boat online. Show up at the marina, the boat is in the water and ready to go. Great solution for anyone concerned about boat maintenance. I have a couple of friends that belong and have good things to say about it.

We are going to New Zeeland next year and my husband was thinking of buying a boat. We are limited in our budget, so he looked for smth new (we have neither extra money nor time to repair) but not expensive, smth like http://http://www.macboats.co.nz/category/lake-boats/ These boats are considered to be ideal for first-time owners because there's no need to fiddle with additional purchases.
I doubt if buying a boat is a good idea in our case, as we don't know how long we are going to stay there. On the other hand, it seems to be quite attractive. My husband\s co-worker bought a boat (also went to NZ, but a year earlier, also found at Macboats) and sends us photos with his happy sun-tanned face peeking from his boat!
