IMHO, Mass. was 10-15 years too late on the casino deals.

The time money and effort spent to attract gambling dens, which only contribute to gambling addictions, would be far better spent in attracting manufacturing companies.

They don't look as bright and shiny but each job in a manufacturing plant has a multiplication effect and the wages paid are better. Casinos may have lots of bright shiny lights, but all they are is an attractive exterior camouflaging the degradation within.

That depends frankly. Manufacturing does still exist however it is not the grunt type that existed in the 50's and 60's. Six sigma changed everything from the 80s onward. Furthermore the numbers required are much less. Springfield already has the CRRC rail factory which I believe is nearly finished. Manufacturing in Mass is only cost effective west of the 495 belt.

There's multipliers with casinos as well. Cleaning crews, laundry services, culinary training, delivery drivers, food, retail etc. Logistically there's only so far you want to import so there is a higher likelihood of being more locally based.

Gradually western Mass has become the place for culinary training in New England.

Having placed more than 1,300 people with jobs, Snapchef expands to offer free culinary job training in Worcester | masslive.com

Springfield announces new $21 million, state-of-the-art food service center for public schools | masslive.com

Is MGM responsible for all of this? No of course not but it certainly adds. It's hard to have any form of attraction without feeding them. I wonder a bit when Worcester gets the Pawsocks to move who would do the vending
