True, but then you potentially lose your radio presets, and other settings. But I know the point you were trying to make so not trying to imply you are incorrect in any way.


A basic scanner is cheap if all you want to do is read a code or reset the light.

And yeah, the MA system is pretty easy to game if you know how to do it. They don't even pop the hood.

That's typical among the luxury brands. They just assume nobody will ever do their own work on the vehicle so they try to automate everything for the owner.

Which is amusing as service in included in the price of the car so it's no additional cost.

That stereotype is pretty accurate, at least for the original owners.

Secondary owners often do some of their own work, but the brands only care about the original owners. They don't make any money off of the resale.

More than 50% of luxury cars are leased which offers a great opportunity for manufacturers to make money on the sales of those used cars:

the manufacturer typically financed the lease, so as the owner makes money on the used sale to the dealer
the manufacturer offers the certification on the vehicle
the manufacturer often offers captive financing on the certified used car
the manufacturer often offers "pre-paid" service on the certified used car
