It's not really, but the platform is associated with a segment of gun owners prone to 'end of days' fetishes (e.g., my brother in-law - he's reformed, thankfully) and the casually informed know the platform is best suited for infantrymen wishing to carry plenty of ammo without the weight (i.e., the m16).

I don't have these associations with a Weatherby or similar as they were designed for a specific task which is fairly inert to non-gun owners.
