Raise your hand if you want to have the possibility of being shot to death each day, ontop of being hated and vilified by a small vocal minority of the local residents. They have a very tough job in todays environment and they deserve the compensation

Imagine being a police officer in Newton? $56k starting salary. You'd likely have to rent/commute from Framingham every day just to make ends meet. I know a sizable % of teachers in the Acton school district live in Worecester and commute everyday. It's not a doomsday scenario, but certainly a different story than a good majority of this country.

There are 20 cops in my town who make 6 figures. That's in a $230 per square foot suburban town 55 miles from Boston where you can afford a starter house on the starting salary without working details. Same for public school teachers though you'd need to finish your masters and get that first 5 year step in pay. Massachusetts isn't expensive once you're not commutable to the Boston jobs if you're not competing against the vacation home buyers. When the minimum wage bumps to $15, there will be a lot of the state where a dual income minimum wage couple can afford a starter home. Just not commutable to Boston jobs.

Metro Boston has the usual high COL math. You need upper middle class income to afford the housing. If you're in the $40K to $80K range, the math works out better if you move to a lower cost place. The cheaper housing more than offsets the reduction in pay. Boston needs higher speed rail to provide access to more square miles of residential housing.

Some people have an illogical hard on for the coppers. When all the data shows it isn’t even in the top 15 most dangerous jobs and requires scant education and is full of rogues. It’s nuts how good copper PR is.

Meh. Most town cops are pretty normal. C's in high school. A few years in the military. A glorified certificate of attendance criminal justice degree. Bump to the top of the queue for civil service jobs. But yeah, great PR.

If it's such a cushy gig, why don't you or more posters do it and take the same advantage?

not requirements for the job, but I guess it's ok for you to stereotype when it fits your narrative.
