I saw a great white last year while kayaking off the shore of Aquinnah in Martha's Vineyard. Now that the seal population is increasing in our area, I imagine we'll see more?

I think it's inevitable since the sharks feed off the seals.

The county’s commissioner says the problem is the growing seal population in the waters off the Cape and Islands. He has a solution to keep the sharks away. He suggests culling the shark population which has gotten out of hand since they started being protected back in 1972.

This! If youve got flippers on and a wet suit and acting like a seal, what would anyone expect a shark to do...

Cape Cod shark attacks show need for better cell service

Quote:
An Aug. 15 shark attack off Long Nook Beach in Truro and the more recent fatal attack on Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet were reminders of the chronic communications problem.
Some Truro beachgoers rushing to the aid of 61-year-old New York resident Bill Lytton said they had to run up a sandy bluff to the parking lot just to get cell service to call 911. Lytton survived and is currently recovering in a Boston hospital.
This past Saturday, at least one of the initial 911 callers from Wellfleet struggled to overcome a bad connection with an emergency dispatcher. The line eventually went silent after cutting in and out, audio recordings showed

We went with no phone, no food, no drinks, no sunscreen, no umbrella, no flip flops, no hats...the list goes on. Just a ratty bath towel, each, and maybe a Frisbee.

And even in the 1950/60s we went like that to Nauset. And we heard shark warnings: be careful in the early morning and late afternoon, careful in late summer, do not go in the water if you have a cut that might be bleeding because sharks are attracted to blood, no shiny objects. (Don't make yourself shark bait.) I don't remember any sightings but maybe there were.

Only a matter of time.

I was swimming in about 10 feet of water off South Beach on MV when a seal popped up about 10 yards away from me to check me out. I promptly got out of the water after that. If there's seals, there will be sharks.

This is good common sense. I am always nonplussed by the people SUP and kayaking among the seals near Monomoy.

I love South Beach, particularly this month when the crowds are completely gone and my dogs can be there with me.

Yet beachgoers cry, "overkill" when lifeguards clear the water when there is a seal sighting.

Something has to be done about the situation, but the entitled public also has to cooperate.
