The much-awaited MGM Grand casino is now open in Springfield, MA.

Who's going?

I might stop by if I'm near it for an event at MassMutal Center. I also heard about a PVTA circulator bus which runs 5 days a week around downtown. I Like the fact it's smoke free. I was also told it's a bit smaller than Mohegan Sun down in Montville, CT.

So it appears the new solution to revitalizing the cities of MA is via entertainment. A casino for Springfield and a baseball park for Worcester. Call me skeptical that these projects will really jump start the downtowns of these cities.

The Hollywood did seem to inject a little life into DT Bangor, ME. Accompanying it was a rise in crime and transience, however. Not sure how much of either can be credited to the casino.

At least the timing is good. The economy is fairly strong and nearby CT is mired in a slump stemming from decades of government mismanagement.

Meanwhile, I saw Maine's Oxford Casino advertising on a city bus on August 16th...in Manchester, NH.

You may be onto something. Even though the 495/Pike/Worcester area is something of a mini-STEM job belt, it does seem Worcester is being promoted also as a playground and Boston alternate for the quiet suburbs surrounding Worcester. I go out in Worcester and most of the people out at events and eating places are from Shrewsbury, Northborough, Westborough, etc.
