Years ago Boston Ski and Sports Club, Appalachian Mountain Club and others had many group trips to Block Island, Nantucket, Stowe, etc. For a few hundred, board a bus with other like-minded folk and head off for the weekend. I've started looking to do some of these again and am coming up empty. I looked at programs through the recreation centers in some of the towns and only am finding stuff like Senior Citizen trips to Atlantic City, bleh. Meetup, REI, zilch. Anything I've missed?

Do those clubs you just mentioned not exist anymore or they just don't run trips like what you describe anymore?

They very much exist, just fewer trips. Seems like everything I look at and everywhere I look, it's either Senior Trip to Atlantic City or extreme Mountain Climbing weekend, nothing in between for us laid-back and young-at-heart folk.

Mike, do you know which towns or any towns that offer good community recreation including weekend trips. I know this will be an influence on the next place I live.

Not sure of any that offer weekend trips. However, a lot of towns have wonderful Parks & Rec and Adult Continuing Education departments. I took an awesome course on BBQ'ing through Newton Adult CE a few years back. It was taught by a guy who works at Blue Ribbon BBQ. I learned a lot and it definitely sparked a new hobby for me.

I have noticed that both Newton and Brookline have rather extensive adult continuing education catalogs.

Brookline as you might imagine has a really extensive catalog of activities for folks of all ages and abilities. Newton has a great range of activities and I've found Needham (especially when you consider the size of the town) has a great catalog as well.
