95 locations throughout New England were closed yesterday without an explanation.

The husband of an assistant manager at multiple Papa Gino’s stores in central Mass. said his wife, her employees, and her supervisors were not even given 24 hours heads up before their stores closed Sunday.

The Dedham-based pizzeria abruptly closed a number of stores in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, but not before depositing extra money and then removing it from the bank accounts of employees, according to the couple.

I've always felt awful for the people who show up at work only to find out they don't have a job. I can't imagine that. And for a company that's fighting for its life, it's not good practice. Though that leads to speculation that they're not actually trying to save anything. They're just trying to minimize debts and losses before selling assets and bailing. Either way, it's unfair to the people who aren't making a ton of money to begin with and don't even have the option of trying to get a job somewhere else before being cut off.

I honestly haven't set foot in a Papa Gino's or D'angelos in some time, but I didn't hate either of them. I'm guessing they're victims of increased competition and changing consumer patterns. Neither store has changed since I was a kid.

shame. They were my favorite of all the chain pizza places. But yes, they didn't really change much since I was a kid. I sadly thought that was a good thing.

Damn, both were decent go-to lunches from my times on the road.

I saw this report last night (can't remember which station) and there was a voice recording left for employees stating that the store was closed and that "you've been fired". Huh? Who was she trying to fool - they are eligible for unemployment benefits.

Between the regular chain places, Dominos, Pizza Hut, Papa John's...they were far the best. In some areas, they were actually the best pizza in town IMO. But saying that, last few times there I couldn't help but notice how empty they were even during what you think would be busy times. Who knows...

Sorry to see all the people lose their jobs like that, pretty low rent of the company.

But they also tended to be more expensive then Dominos. The price was closer to the local pizza places, pizza places that are usually better.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who liked their pizzas. Most of the chain pizza places are awful.

That said, the few times I've been to a Papa GInos there's never been a crowd.

I like their pizzas, mostly. There is some differences in the stores, though. Some are better than others.

They also sell their pizzas in some supermarkets. Frozen, and you cook them at home. I bought one and cooked it. It was awful.

There is no good way to tell people that their employment is over. Still, this seems like a particularly bad way - abruptly, impersonally and with not a single shred of support for those terminated.
