I thought the town I live in (Stow) had started a plan back in 2014 to decrease costs for full-day kindergarten until it would become free, according to the proposal/plan it was suppose to be free starting next school year. I just found out it is not free, if anything it increased 2.5% just in October! After spending thousands and thousands of dollars on daycare my husband and I finally thought we would have a little break with our oldest child going to kindergarten.
I was wondering if anyone can speak to this issue, as taxes have gone up in the town I would have thought it was going towards the free full-day kindergarten proposal/plan.
Is this common? Can you please let me know which town(s) have free full-day kindergarten?
Won't the fee for full day still be less than you paid for daycare?
But, to answer your question, it varied by district. Newton had what was technically called "full day" but it was only full day two days a week. There is a half day for all elementary kids on Tuesdays, and then half the kids had a M and Th "long day" and the other half had a long day on W and F. But, the district has just made a decision to change this and it will be full day for all K kids starting in the Fall of 2019.
I suggest you bring this up to your school committee and in any Facebook groups that are connected to your town and/or to the schools in the town.
Westford is $5000 for full day everyday. Topical as we just found this out this week too. Chelmsford has free full day daycare, and though only a % of a districts budget allocation is involved, that budget has to come from somewhere including property taxes.. Could explain a small % of Chelmsford high effective tax rate.
It all tends to come full circle. Either way, you’re paying for these services one way or the other. And, more than likely, those fees help pay for other parts of your school district, so you may reap some other benefits that aren’t visible.. Updated facilities would be one.
Really? Must've happened recently since I had to pay for my now 4th grader's kindergarten.
I just read some articles, etc about it and saw that Sudbury passed free day kindergarten. I am just surprised parents haven't been up in arms over this for years!
