I'm surprised no one mentioned Bedford. There are parts (e.g. near the depot, bike trail, town center) that are walkable, but the town has good schools and would represent a reverse commute to Lowell for the OP. Plenty of small local dining and easy access to Burlington for the big retail stuff.

Ehh, it’s walkable like Mass Ave South Acton is “walkable”. That’s a stretch. No train for weekend trips downtown either.

But, great town and good option if they have the budget.
