In years past I knew two unrelated people from Ashburnham and both of them pronounced it as Ash-burn-um. Three syllables.

I've always heard Ash-burn-ham. Also West-"MIN"-ster.

That's what I always thought, too.

That's a commonplace error but it's understandable. Peters-ham. (and even though it doesn't look like a "ham" I cringe when I hear "Am-Hurst."

I didn't go to UMass, but I've lived in the Pioneer Valley since 1980, and I can say definitively that it's Peters-ham.

I live in SC now and in Columbia (The State Capital) there is a street spelled Huger. To the locals it has 3 different pronunciations:

Hug-er
Hug-ger
Hue-gur

In Charleston SC the same named street is pronounced:

Hue-Gee

Beaufort SC..Bue-ferd
Beauford NC..Boe-ferd

Staunton VA

Staun-ton
Stan-ton to the locals.

I work with a long time Ashburnham resident and she says this is correct -Like you left Easter Supper in the oven to long.
- and to watch out for people saying "Westminister"!

On a similar note I have heard Lancaster, NH pronounced as "Lanksta", but haven't heard that in MA.
