It's all subjective. We made the drive out to Worthington from Springfield just the other day and found the route (mostly 112) to be enjoyable, and not long.

I thought it was obvious that I was referring to in the winter on a daily basis, as in commuting to and from work. Ice and snow on those narrow, twisty, hilly, mostly deserted roads. Back again after work when it's dark. Not enjoyable.

Not sure what that has to do with the topic though? OP never mentioned politics.
Nothing to do with the topic and therefore this should not be mentioned, even if the corroborating 2016 outcomes on a map are factual. Granville has great cheese, pleasing hills, and a history of manufacturing high-quality drums. The schools are mediocre by the standards of contemporary Massaholes with positive net worths (aka Whitey McWellesley) but not that bad for Western MA. Like a number of hilltowns, it has a notable suburban function but a rural character. Has OP considered simply staying in Franklin County podunks? The lesser villages of Montague, outer Greenfield, nearer Colrain, and Bernardston come to mind as more affordable than the respectable Valley areas near colleges while still exhibiting signs of crunch and under an hour to Springfield.
