Almost nothing is affordable in this place for a middle class (hahaha!) person, but let's pretend we can still make that kind of distinction ...

I'm divorcing and will have to move from the Malden area, so I am pretty much mostly familiar with the orange line tract.
I work in the West End of Boston.
My daughter is going to start college in the Fall at either Umass or one of the colleges in Boston by the Longwood area.

I was hoping to be able to move some place from where it would not be too complicated for my daughter to get to class.

For example, is Dorchester an absolute no-no? What about Cambridge? I'm open to suggestions.

As far as renting, it depends if utilities are included, but let's just say I'd rather not go too much over $2,000/month.
As far as buying, I would be probably looking for something around the $300K.
And those numbers are my uber-upper limits.

Pretty bad, uh?

So a two bedroom then? Or?

Buying would be tough.

You aren't going anywhere near Cambridge for that. Not sure why you are dogging Dorchester, but even most parts of there would be out of reach with that budget.

You could get lucky renting.

Dorchester, around Shawmut/Ashmont. Plenty 2 BR for 1900-2100. Or Quincy. Youre fine. People on these boards usually elevate the price of every town by 20%. One floor of a decent two family built in 1910. Youre all set.

Maybe rent wise you're right, but buying no way.

There are only 2 condos in Dorchester under 300k available at all and only a handful in Quincy (and only 3 that I can see that are 2 beds).

I mean technically it can be done I guess, but you're looking at slim, slim, slim pickings.

Dorchester and Quincy really aren't much different rent wise, if you're talking about the part of Dorchester next to the Red Line.
