I was reading a local western Ma weekly paper and they had an article about a car pool
From exit 7 in Ludlow to Boston. Interestingly most were state employees who had severe job lock and started commuting to Boston when their agency closed their western Ma office.

Highways naturally are faster but sometimes being stuck in traffic is worse in them since you cant pull over as easily. Gas stations and stores on highways always cost more. Longest I remember was one that went from new haven to Manhattan. Then another was Danbury ct to the south shore. He only went back every three weeks for family
There is a train from New Haven to Manhattan. There are lots of people in New Haven who make regular trips to NYC. And I'm sure there are more than a few who do that commute for a regular job. NYC in particular seems to get people to accept long commutes. I knew people who lived in Philadelphia and worked in NYC. They commuted daily. It sounded hellish to me, but some NYC jobs you just can't get anywhere else.

I did Greenfield to Westford for a few years, 70 miles and 1.25–1.5 hours each way. Long distance but at least Route 2 is rarely jammed. Orange to Acton is an improvement at just 45 min one way. I have met numerous green collar workers from Central and Western Mass hamlets who can’t stand your finance-bro grind and commute equally or farther out than that (Petersham, Colrain, Blandford) to both work and live in actual nature, report to Fish & Game HQ in Westborough or DCR on Causeway St a couple days / week.

In fairness, there aren't any jobs in New Haven. Of course the question then becomes why you would live there and work in NYC, that's a question I can't answer.
