That column was meant to be funny, and it was. The columnist lived in Weymouth. He wrote comparisons on Hingham and Weymouth. I like the one about learning from each other. I don't have it in front of me to know if I'm quoting exactly, but it said, Their (Hingham) kids can teach ours about trusts. Our (Weymouth) kids can teach theirs about oil changes.

I can see how it could be insendiary if it weren't meant as a joke and written by someone from Weymouth. Omitting those who live in the new huge houses on their own new roads on cramped cul-de-sacs with no land, Hingham is full of people who live frugally, invest long-term, and live in modest homes, in order to be in a town with a good school system and quiet neighborhoods. For the cost of these small homes in Hingham, much larger houses could be purchased elsewhere. The ones who get accused of being snobs are the kids, being called that by kids from other towns. I don't know if it has changed, but back when I was in school in Hingham, a lot of the kids were sheltered and only knew of their own lives. So, if they spoke of tennis lessons and ski lessons, how their parents wouldn't let them buy a car that didn't have air bags, what private schools they were on the waitlist for, kids with parents without money heard this as bragging about money. These Hingham kids were expected to go to college and graduate school and earn their own money. Those who didn't quickly discovered that their parents' money wasn't theirs.
