Everyone is obsessed with the idea that the commute is 1 hour each way. I can assure you as a daily Providence line commuter that during peak rush hour train trips you'll have plenty of days where 1 hour becomes 1.5-2 hours.

Have you strolled down Causeway St., Downtown Crossing, The Boston Common, City Hall Plaza, South Station/Dewey Square, etc. recently? Not sure it's any better of a cast than downtown PVD.

This happens. I would still say it's a hell of a lot more consistent than driving the same distance, and with the added benefit of not having to actually drive. A drive from Easton can be 1.5-2 hours if there's an accident at rush hour.

All populous cities have issues...Providence is unfortunate in that the crowd of characters that haunt that particular downtown is condensed in a very tight area. Gives off an appearance of dysfunction right in the center of an urban renewal project.

Lol walk around Chinatown or Harvard Square and tell me there's no unsavory characters.

Do you have a reading comprehension problem? I never said other metro areas were problem-free. I made mention of that in the post you quoted. I made an observation about Providence which is valid. No kidding other cities have issues.

If you live in Providence and work in Boston you have to factor the $450 or so dollars yours paying on a commuter rail pass.

The roads aren't straight either. When I lived on the south shore I nearly got a ri state job. It's easily an hour because 495 is a half hour away alone. The lack of engineered roads and city planned leads to inefficienties in eastern mass.

The Amtrak train from Providence to Boston really is 1 hour. That's about the same as the MBTA commuter rail from Westborough, Gloucester, or Newburyport. So it may not be a convenient commute, but it's not a wild idea, and this place is a 5 minute walk to the Providence train station, so local transport on that end very efficient.

That's true, but for anyone driving a good distance to work, there is significant cost. Federal mileage rate (IRS) is up to 55 cents/mi. If you're commuting 30 miles each way to work, that's 300 miles/week, corresponding to $165/week.

And that assumes free parking at work too. Good luck finding parking downtown for less than $400/month
