That said, the commute from Providence is awful.
Before we married my husband lived in PVD area. He ended up working remotely most of the time. It was easier for both him and his employer if he just stayed put rather than fight rush hour traffic.

OTOH his rent was far lower than anything he would've had to pay in the Boston area. This was almost 20 years ago, though, so YMMV.

You could try East Greenwich or North Kingstown, RI. They both have decent public school systems and are on the commuter rail. Only issue is, depending where you live, the drive to the commuter rail stop will be an additional 15~ min on top of a 1.5hr commute into Boston.

I'd say look in places like Foxborough or Mansfield if you want good schools and a non-life draining commute.

I just want to point out that Foxborough or Mansfield will still leave you with a 90 minute door to door commute unless you live and work right next to both the stations you board at.

Then I guess RI would be 2+ hours

The biggest problem is that the published commuter rail schedules rarely translate into the actual travel time. Sure, it's a 45 minute train ride, when nothing goes wrong. Add in a 10-15 minute drive to the train station, the normal excuse of the day 20-30 minute delay from Keolis and a 10-15 minute walk to the office and it quickly adds up.

From RI I imagine most people rarely experience a less than 90 minute commute, even if the published schedule makes it seem plausible.

That's why Attleboro might be the best bet, if they insist on commuting from that direction.

While better than Providence, Attleboro schools are not that great, either.

We have 2 little kids and the cost of living in Boston is crushing us. Child care alone is close to $2,000/month and rent prices are through the roof as you all know. We're trying to find a place to live that would still be a good commute for work in Boston but that is affordable. We were told Providence, RI is a good deal / cost of living plus we already have friends down there as well. Just wondering if you all know of people who make that commute daily (living in Providence, commuting to Boston...straight line on Amtrak) or if this is crazy. If crazy, what are areas in Greater Boston that a family can afford to live?

We're okay sacrificing size of apartment but would ideally like to be in a good school district and I have heard that Providence is currently going through a state take over of their public schools... so that has me concerned. Anyone know of good public elementary schools along the Amtrak line from Providence to Boston? Thanks!
just move to southeastern MA, Bristol County or even southern Norfolk County

Do Providence schools even matter i don't think OP is using Boston schools...

Try Bridgewater, Raynham, Norwood, North Attleboro..

The elementary and middle schools are fine for the most part, maybe even slightly above average. It's the high school that's the concern, but that may change with the new $260 million dollar replacement they are building. Remains to be seen...
