My husband is interviewing for a job in Cambridge. We have been looking at housing prices out there, both renting and buying and they seem astronomical. We would be moving from the Sacramento area of CA. 4-5 bedroom rentals here are in the $2500-$3000 range, 4/2 homes $500-$650k. We lived in the Boston area 10 years ago and prices seemed to have taken off. I lived in a 3 bedroom apt (2 family home) in Arlington in 2007 that only cost $1050 a month! How do people do it? What towns that are commutable to Cambridge make sense? Looking to spend no more than $4k a month for rent or buy in the $700k range. Would like a 3/2 (and what is up with all the 1 bathroom homes!). We want to move back for family but wondering if we are making the right choice.

To answer your question, households with multiple incomes. As many as possible.

Is the job in Kendall Square?

There are homes in the ranges you are looking for. They just require a 45-75min commute to Cambridge or a town that is considered a little more “blue-collar”

If mediocre schools aren't an issue, I would think you could at least buy something for less than that in Malden or Everett and be closer.

Have rich parents pay 50k a year for elementary and high school, go to an Ivy league, graduate easily unless you are a bowling ball with a face painted on, then go through life talking about hard work and lecturing people in a Ted talk.

You just might be able to squeeze into Arlington at that price (Might be a bath and a half or house that needs some cosmetics). Otherwise, you could probably get into Woburn in that range.

1.5 was pretty much the norm among all my friend's families growing up, worked just fine for a family of 4.

You can get into a nicely renovated 3-4/2 split or cape in Burlington for $600-700K. There's the express bus to Alewife and a quick red line ride to Kendall or commuter rail from Wilmington to North Station and a shuttle to Cambridge.
