I believe this is more about influence of the unions and political appearances for the school committees, than what is actually going on with covid.
I think your opinion is very reflective of your bias.

Having listened to my own districts debate, it seems to have more to do with the rolling data. Despite ample evidence of low transmission between young children, there are still a number of high spread rates recorded in elementary and high schools globally - the latter seeing much higher transmission rates in general. The Jaffa Israel is one example. Additionally there appears to be some optimism ... or perhaps plain ol' hope ... that punting a few more months will yield more robust clinical solutions and testing.

Sure, politics play a role. Teachers in my sphere are pushing their unions rather hard knowing their corporate peers are seeing work-from-home policies extend into 2021. They're certainly seeking some equality of treatment.

Trump posted on both Twitter and Facebook that children are virtually immune to coronavirus.

Both deleted his post - for spreading misinformation.

The state is paying for some free testing across Massachusetts. However everything for western Massachusetts was either in Springfield or Agawam and one of those companies completely sold at a time slots in 2 hours for the two weeks of time they would be testing. There is no free testing in Franklin, Berkshire, Hampshire and much of Worcester County. Tests are at least $100 out of pocket and a large family can add up.

Then there is the six to ten days it now takes for results. I don't think any school is going back 100% this fall. Even affluent areas. I know people on school committees and all eyes and lawyers will be looking.

Heck here's a question. How is metco supposed to work now? Precovid done of those kids got on the bus at 6am

School committee vote for my wife's district was last night. Started at 7PM and didn't vote til almost 12:30.

K-5 will be 5-days a week, dismissal at 11:30AM and remote the rest of the day.

6-8 will be 3-2 hybrid

High school is full remote to start the year, and then possibly move to hybrid.

Fun times.

The rolling data suggests full remote high school is a rather good idea as transmission rates seem to be equal to the data coming from the general adult population. 6-8 ... eh, hybrid probably lowers risk some but the transmission rates do seem high enough to justify full remote.

K-5? Full day K-5 seems extremely viable assuming staff have adequate PPE and training. Very low transmission rates so far.

I can't imagine being a parent, student, or teacher during this time. My heart goes out to all of you. Seriously, best of luck and hopefully we will be in a place to start some semblance of a return to normal by the new year or next school year at the latest.

Lunch is the issue. I don't have the details, but seems it cannot be offered for some reason. Hence class til 11:30 and then dismissed and remote the rest of the day.

Not sure how we will make that work on our end with two working adults and having to pick up at 11:30. Still need to figure out daycare for our 3 year old, and waiting to see what my other's son's school does.

I assume it's because masks would have to come off to eat.

Colleges in the state are starting to reverse course. Mt Holyoke and Smith both went remote-only in the past 2 days.

As somebody else who has no answers, I echo this.
