I know that this is a long shot, as "cheap" and "childcare" don't tend to go together in this country, let alone in this state. However, as a shot in the dark, does anyone happen to know of low cost childcare options (pre-COVID, obviously, as everything is currently shut down) in the North Shore area? Churches, in-home daycares, daycare centers...if it's low cost, has a sliding scale, etc. A friend is looking at the potential reality of single parenting on a salary that puts them out of range for low-income assistance (around 50k a year).

The state department of EEC website has a list of all licensed daycare providers in the state you can sort by distance etc.

"North Shore" covers a lot of ground. If you lived in Swampscott, for example, you would not use a day care in Rowley. Where does your friend live or work? That might narrow things a bit.

She is in the Beverly/Salem area.

I'd recommend looking at that EEC website and then directly interviewing providers. I found a great, lower-cost provider that way. I found that in-home daycare providers will generally be less expensive than daycare centers.

The Northshore YMCA has childcare locations in both Salem and Beverly and offer a sliding scale. The Beverly Children's Learning Center also offers subsidies.
